In January 2005, an exciting Education for Peace (EFP) Project in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) was launched with the financial support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The project involves the implementation of a two-year Intensive Education for Peace Program within four selected elementary schools. The aim of this Project is to foster inter-ethnic harmony within and among the four EFP–JICA school communities across Bosnia and Herzegovina. The four schools, located in Lukavica, Mostar, Oštra Luka and Matuzići/Doboj-Jug, were reconstructed by the Grant Aid of the Japanese Government and have a population of approximately 2,100 students, 180 teachers, 4,000 parents/guardians plus members of the greater communities. In addition to the participation of these school communities, JICA and EFP-Balkans also look forward to working together with relevant local and national educational authorities in BiH, whose support are imperatively significant for the success of the project.

EFP-Balkans, the Japanese Government, and JICA have worked on collaborative projects since 2002 and the areas of collaboration are currently under expansion. JICA is an independent administrative institution established by Japanese law for the purpose of implementing technical cooperation on a governmental basis under the category of Japan’s bilateral grant aid. Funding of the four Education for Peace Project schools demonstrated the continuation of JICA’s support towards peace building in Bosnia and Herzegovina within the priority areas of long-term development, post-conflict reconstruction and conflict prevention.
