FEBRUARY TO BE PROCLAIMED “PEACE MONTH” BY MAYORS IN SARAJEVO, TRAVNIK, AND BANJA LUKA REGIONS

FIRST NATIONAL PEACE EVENT 24 FEBRUARY 2001: BANJA LUKA TO HOST TRAVNIK AND SARAJEVO GUESTS

The Education for Peace (EFP) Project-administered by Landegg Academy, Switzerland, and funded by the Government of Luxembourg-aims to contribute to the creation of a culture of peace in BiH by equipping 400 teachers, 6,000 students, and 10,000 parents to become peacemakers.

At the request of the Education for Peace (EFP) Project, the Mayor of Sarajevo, Mr. Hamamdzic, the Mayor of Travnik, Mr. Benan Halilovic, and the Mayor of Banja Luka, Mr. Dragoljub Davidovic have agreed to pronounce the month of February, 2001 officially as “Peace Month.” There will be three successive weeks of EFP activities in the following six participating schools:

  • 2nd Gymnasium, Sarajevo
  • 3rd Primary School, Ilidza
  • Mixed Secondary School, Travnik
  • Nova Bila Primary School, Nova Bila
  • Banja Luka Gymnasium, Banja Luka
  • Ivo Andriæ Primary School, Banja Luka

During this period, all students, with the assistance of teachers, will give artistic performances and share visual displays that relate their subjects of study to the principles of peace. In each city, members of government, media, and the wider community will attend the opening ceremonies, and a panel of judges will observe the performances and activities throughout the week. The schedule of the “Peace Month” events is as follows:

  • Travnik: February 4-10
  • Sarajevo: February 11-17
  • Banja Luka: February 18-23
  • National Peace Event, Banja Luka: February 24

The activities of the month will culminate in the first National Peace Event in Banja Luka on the 24 February 2001. On this date, students, parents, and teachers from each participating region will gather in Banja Luka for the first National Peace Event, where selected presentations will be shared from each of the six schools. Travnik will host a similar national event in May, and a final international event will be held in Sarajevo in June. The purpose of these Peace Events is to bring 6 November, 2006 religious backgrounds to participate in a celebration of peace, and to share with the reflections of these students with the wider national community. High-ranking public officials, the Director of the EFP project, and invited special guests will open the ceremonies of the day.
