Home International EFP Conference LANDEGG UNIVERSITY AND THE SWISS DEVELOPMENT AGENCY CO-HOST MAJOR CONFERENCE ON EDUCATION FOR PEACE 14 May 2002 — (Wienacht) Landegg International University and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation are co-hosts of an invitational two-day conference to discuss expansion of the university’s Education for Peace program. The 30 participants gathering at Landegg 14-16 May will include representatives from the Swiss, Canadian and Japanese governments as well as those from the Bosnian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministries of Education, officials from Canton Appenzell-Ausserrhoden and St.Gallen. Referring to the “transforming” power of the Education for Peace program in its first six pilot schools, the BiH government has issued an enthusiastic letter of recommendation to the conference, emphasizing the success of EFP in “creating a culture of cooperation and mutual understanding”, among the three main ethnic groups in Bosnia--the Bosniak, Croat and Serb. They are appealing for international support in order to make possible the “introduction of EFP to all secondary schools in the country”, one of the two goals of the conference. Directors of four of the Bosnian schools will share their experiences with EFP, which is preparing the next generation of Bosnian community leaders not just to avoid violence and learn to “tolerate”, but to overcome the effects of the 1992-1995 war and become true peacemakers. A second focus of the conference, in keeping with Landegg University’s growing reputation in the field of e-learning and Web design, will be to explore ways to develop Education for Peace for Internet use, thus making it easily and cheaply available for students and teachers in any part of the world and better able to fill the demand for its application in other parts of the world. The university is already being overwhelmed with requests to implement Education for Peace in other conflict zones of the world, such as Ireland, Eritrea and South Africa. “This is the first time that I am hearing about a project, complete with numbers and statistics, which shows how we can prepare for peace as we have been preparing for war”, said Ruth Engo, Senior Economics Advisor of ECOSOC at the United Nations, when she heard about EFP at a recent meeting in New York. International reaction to the Education for Peace program is growing. During the recent UN Special Session on Children, the Bosnian Mission distributed a glowing letter about the EFP program to delegations and heads of state, recommending it “to all the nations for consideration, as a model of society oriented towards peace, cooperation, and development”.
