" How to transmit a culture of peace to students"

On Saturday 1 February 2003, at the Hotel Bristol in Mostar, an Inauguration Ceremony was held for the Education for Peace Program.

The EFP program is to be implemented soon in two Mostar secondary schools: the Mostar Gymnasium and the Secondary Economics School "Jozo Martinovic".

The program was initiated by the International Education for Peace Institute, an affiliate agency of Landegg International University, in Switzerland, and was first implemented in six schools in Bosnia-Herzegovina three years ago.

According to Naghmeh Sobhani, Director of EFP–BALKANS, this program equips young people, in a sustained and systematic way, with the skills necessary for them to become builders of a culture of peace.

Through seminars and workshops, EFP is being offered to teachers and school administrators, to help them learn how to transmit the culture of peace to students and how to implement those principles in daily life. After the seminars, teachers integrate the principles of EFP in all subject areas, every day and in every classroom.

Now that the program has been launched in schools in Nova Bila, Travnik, Banja Luka and Sarajevo, it will be implemented in two Mostar schools and, according to Project Director Naghmeh Sobhani, by September 2003 one hundred more schools will be selected. The ultimate goal is to integrate EFP into the curricula of all schools in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

In the early phase of its implementation, the EFP Program was sponsored by the Government of Luxembourg, and they have now been joined by the governments of Switzerland, Japan and Canada.
