OFFICIAL LAUNCHING OF THE EUCATION FOR PEACE PROGRAM IN 100 SECONDARY SCHOOLS ACROSS BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

On 5-7 September 2003, a two-day Intensive Training Seminar in Education for Peace was held at the Saraj Hotel in Sarajevo to launch the start of the Education for Peace Program in 100 secondary schools across Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). The participating schools are from 60 different locations, representing every Canton within the Federation of BiH, the Brcko District and all regions within the Republika Srpska.

Over a 3-year implementation period, all teachers, students, parents, administrative and support staff of these 100 schools will be taking part in the program. As the first activity of the program, 200 selected teachers from all subject areas within the participating schools will come together to receive intensive training in the EFP conceptual framework and its methods of application. These educators will be certified to be EFP trainers and facilitators in their respective schools, following completion of a two-year EFP Professional Training program.

Education for Peace (EFP) is a comprehensive, sustained, and systematic curriculum of peace education and conflict resolution that aims to assist young people, through the help of their teachers and parents, to have the necessary skills to be builders of a culture of peace in their daily lives, in their school environments and in their communities at large. The EFP program approach integrates an in-depth study and application of the principles of peace into every subject area, every day and in every classroom.

Since its pilot phase, initiated 3 years ago, EFP has been implemented in Bosnia and Herzegovina with the participation of more than 6,000 students and their parents, 400 teachers and school staff and with the strong support of education ministries, municipal leaders, national and international authorities and the media. The pilot program yielded such significant results that it gained the recognition and endorsement of the BiH Ministry of Foreign Affairs and BiH Ministries of Education and resulted in an invitation to expand the EFP program to all BiH primary and secondary schools. As a response to this invitation, and in full collaboration with all Educational Authorities at the Entity, Cantonal and District levels, the EFP-World program, which is the multi-media based version of the Education for Peace program, is now being launched in 100 selected secondary schools across Bosnia and Herzegovina. The long-term objective of EFP-WORLD is to offer peace education on-line to any and all schools in the world. The EFP-World Program is administered by the International Education for Peace Institute, based in Switzerland, and its affiliate, the Education for Peace Institute of the Balkans, a registered non-governmental organization in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
