Youth Paving the Pathway to Peace What is the Youth Peace-builder Network (YPN)? Creating a culture of peace requires dynamic and innovative thought and action. It also requires the courage of individuals who choose to be distinguished as peace-makers. The current conditions of the world illustrate that it is young people who demonstrate the initiative, intelligence and dynamism necessary to create a culture of peace. YPN is an emerging network of youth mobilized as leaders in the effort to create a global culture of peace. Trained in cutting edge concepts of peace-making and conflict transformation, YPN participants lead their peers in exploring the fundamental ideas, worldviews and actions which characterize a culture of peace. How is YPN organized? YPN involves training youth who then engage their peers to explore the dynamics of creating a culture of peace. YPN is made up of small groups of youth who are trained in a youth peace-building approach based on an innovative new model of peacemaking called Conflict-free Conflict Resolution (CFCR). Once trained, the youth create presentations, workshops, and other interventions for their peers in their schools and communities. When one youth group becomes distinguished as leaders in peace-building, others are motivated to form similar groups. Every time a trained youth group offers a presentation or workshop, they are helping inspire and empower their peers to do the same. YPN aims to have a domino effect, so that even a few dedicated peace-builders may impact how thousands of individuals think and act for peace. How do I form a YPN group? The first step in forming a YPN group is to mobilize courageous young people in your school or community who wish to be distinguished as peace-makers. The second step is for the group to receive the necessary training which will help empower the group to act. The trained YPN group is ready to be a mechanism for the creation of a culture of peace. Through local activities and networking with like-minded initiatives and groups around the world, dynamic and important opportunities arise.
The story of one YPN group YPN is a new initiative, but its effects are already being felt. In September 2002, a YPN group of approximately 12 students was formed at a private high school in New York City. These highly motivated youth wanted to act as peace-makers at both the local and international levels. After receiving training, the group became active. Two members of the group traveled to the Canadian Arctic to conduct workshops for 250 high school students. Some of the group members also made presentations on peace-building in their own school and at other schools in the area. Three members of the group traveled across the continent to British Columbia to partner with Aboriginal young people to explore ways of thinking about conflict and violence. Initiatives such as these are ongoing. Who do I contact about YPN? YPN is an Education for Peace initiative ( www.efpinternational.org ). To talk to a youth who is part of YPN, or to learn more about the project, please contact us. |
