Home EFP-World EFP–World is a comprehensive, multi-media based Education for Peace program for teachers and students of upper primary and secondary schools. The ultimate long-term objective of the EFP–World project is to offer peace education online to any and all schools in the world, particularly in those regions where the ravages of war, terrorism, prejudice, rapid socio-economic and cultural change and the demands of modern life have created conditions of insecurity and conflict in families, schools and communities. The EFP-World “core curriculum” involves 20 hours of online training for students and 25 hours of online training for teachers. The curriculum focuses on the fundamental concepts and elements of peace: the oneness of humanity; unity in diversity; democracy; human rights; interethnic harmony; consultative and non-adversarial conflict resolution practices; and principles of psycho-social recovery from the traumatic impact of conflict and violence on large populations. The program combines instructional text, questions-and-answers, multiple-choice quizzes, prompts, evaluation and polling mechanisms, suggestions for further reading or investigation and recommended supplementary activities for the classroom. EFP–World may be taken as a complete course, however, it is primarily intended to complement classroom study in all school subjects and provide a framework within which to study such fundamental subjects as history, sociology, political science and economics. The online program encourages the exploration of EFP themes in all subjects and provides case studies and examples that draw from topics across the curricula. This approach enables teachers and students to understand the inherent relationship between peace and all fields of learning and activity and establishes the foundation for the future development of peace-oriented curriculum in the public school system. In the long term, the core curriculum will be supplemented with additional EFP lesson samples developed by participating schools which reflect regional and cultural specificities and are delivered in the appropriate mother tongues. The overall aim for this second phase of development is to provide EFP-World in the six languages of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Portuguese, Russian), as well as other languages as is feasible. In September 2003, the first phase of this long-term project was initiated in 100 secondary schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina through grants provided by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Vectis Solutions, a Toronto-based technology company. This initial phase involves the participation of over 60,000 students, 5,000 teachers and school staff and by extension, the families and community at large. The project is being implemented in both the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska upon the invitation of the state Government and the respective Ministries of Education in both entities of the country. The EFP–World program is administered by the International Education for Peace Institute (EFP-International) . |
